A recent survey by Stop Procrastinating, for instance, found that 56% of Facebook users said they used Facebook compulsively. Of these, 68% said they were worried by their inability to control their use of Facebook
The survey found that people were increasingly unable to control their use of Facebook and this was resulting in them accessing when they shouldn’t. For instance, people admitted to updating their posts during their friends’ wedding speeches, during a film at the cinema and during a romantic date. Facebook can also impact on people lives by reducing their ability to work. For instance, writers says that social media and Facebook distracts them and can cause writer’s block.
A majority of students say that it impacts on their ability to study and can even reduce their grades if they are distracted for to long. Students who want to study more effectively are also increasingly turning to website blockers. Recent research on students and internet use found that more than 70% of students believed the internet was having such an impact on their ability to study that they were significantly worried. The distraction that the internet caused also increased student’s exam stress.
Many academic studies have found that Facebook addiction is an increasingly problem today. We are increasingly looking to satiate our desire for new information by constantly checking social media, emails and the web. This thrill of finding out something new and contacting our friends via social media is so powerful that it can get in the way of pressing and important work as well as relationships. There is now a body of evidence showing that overuse of Facebook can change the structure of the brain.
